Empathy
Last week I watched the first 20 or so minutes of Dominion (2018) on YouTube.
I interrupted the viewing to read some of the comments. As I usually do, I sorted them by "new". There were two things that stood out:
with nearly 130,000 comments, the number of people who apparently still think they are being original when they joke about how they enjoyed their chicken tenders (or other meat) whilst watching the documentary -- or, alternatively, who feel compelled to pile on with that same unoriginal comment. To the people from both categories: there's a reason why that type of comment does not appear when you sort by 'Top' (= best)...
all but one of the comments written in Russian contained the word Похуй, which basically means IDGAF.
As someone who spent most of his teenage years in the Cold War 1980s, I have always held close the line I hope the Russians love their children, too. Noticing the consistency in the Russian responses now made me wonder if this callousness towards other living beings reflects a broader cultural pattern.
Together with the current state of democracy in the USA, I don't feel this bodes well for the prospect of world peace, any time soon.
